Too smooth not to post.

I’m not a Wale fan but I’m cautiously coming around to his newer, Maybach-approved material. This is a quickly thrown-together essay about that.

Rick Ross’ birthday at King of Diamonds. Yeah, you read the blog posts about dude throwing around $1M, but watching it is another level. If that number is legit, it’s the most don’t-give-a-fuck balling (the best kind) I’ve seen a rapper do in a while. NSFW, duh.

Rick Ross, 'Teflon Don' review →
Did this for the home team. There were plenty of nuances I wanted to point out but you know how space constraints/audience recognition goes…
(That “Tears of Joy” hook still gets me every time.)

In all seriousness, video of the year?

Rick Ross, “Super High (Sativa Remix) (feat. Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa)” (2010, Internet)
I’m down with “B.M.F.” but I’m not ready to give up on “Super High,” a single that epitomizes luscious, high-shelf roll-out music. Ross rarely makes a wrong move in terms of collaborations, so it seems like a usual stroke of Bossness to pick Curren$y and Wiz to jump on a song called “Super High”. It gives Ross a different look before Teflon Don drops (some rabid fans of Spitta/Khalifa may have thought Ross was wack before this, and they still might, but there will be conversions). Plus, judging from the three rappers’ Twitter accounts, there’s a genuine bond (something that happens when weed is involved) and respect for each other. Hearing Ross drop Taylor Gang and Jets was something I didn’t expect to hear, ever, but it has a nice ring to it.

That Albert Anastasia EP is a Frisbee. (I am seriously alarmed by the regression in Ross’ raps, as if he knows he’s gotten good so he can do his “Hustlin’” rain dance over hollow “banger” beats for 45 minutes.)
His Twitter account on the other hand, @rickyrozay, has been incredibly entertaining. (Sample: “Its a beautiful day to be alive..start with eggwhites and lavender chronic buds…”) So we’re back to even (kind of? OK, not really but I still dig “Super High”), and thus, my high expectations for Teflon Don remain in tact. A true measure of a boss: He doesn’t let you down.
